The content and presentation of the Counselling and Family Therapy courses, established by Doctor Bruce and Nellie Litchfield, have been developed out of a lifetime of rich experience. Training includes learning basic counselling skills and a general model of Christian counselling in the first year, and learning a Christian model of family therapy and a supervised therapy practicum in the second year. The third year, the Vocational Graduate Certificate, consolidates and extends the learning of the first two years with extensive clinical and integrative work.

Four courses are offered:

  • Certificate IV in Christian Counselling and Family Therapy - first year
  • Diploma of Counselling and Family Therapy (Christian) - second year
  • Advanced Diploma of Counselling and Family Therapy (Christian) - second year
  • Vocational Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Family Therapy (Christian) - third year.

AIFC's courses are all accredited by the Australian Government (Australian Registration Council, ACT) and are full-time, requiring on average commitment of between 15-20 hours a week.

These course meet the professional training standards for membership of the Australian Counselling Association, Christian Counsellors Association of Australia, the Australian Association of Marriage and Family Counsellors and Counsellors and Psychotherapists Association of NSW.

AIFC Vocational Graduate Certificate is accredited by the Australian Government and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). AIFC is now enrolling the inaugural student intake for 2010.

The courses are in accord with the teachings of the world leaders in Christian counselling such as Lawrence Crabb, Mark McMinn, Archibald Hart, Grant Martin, Sandra Wilson, Gary Collins, Frank Minirth, Paul Meier, Norman Wright, Everett Worthington Jr., Clifford and Joyce Penner, and many others.

Students have three years to complete each course. For exaple three years to complete the Certificate IV in Christian Counselling, and a further three years to complete the units unique to the Diploma courses (the Year Two units). However each individual unit must be completed within the time specified in the AIFC Handbook for Students. Units must also be completed in the correct sequence.

The AIFC Handbook for Students provided to students at the start of the course is comprehensive. It sets out full details on AIFC, its policies, code of ethics, staff, fees, all assignments, due dates for assignments, assessment methods, elements of competency and performance criteria, student rights and responsibilities, language/literacy forms, feedback and evaluation forms, and other forms.

The academic year begins in February or early March each year and is divided into four 8 to 10 week long terms. Each term starts with a three day intensive teaching seminar held in each of the state/territory capitals (except Tasmania and Darwin) and Newcastle and Townsville. Seminars are usually Thursday through until Saturday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, and they consist of lectures in the mornings and tutorial and small group work in the afternoons.  In between seminars students work from home to complete assignments supported by a tutor who marks and provides feedback. As well they attend two local small group meetings with fellow students to fellowship and encouraging each other, practising skills and discussing exercises. The academic year ends with a one day seminar in November or early December.

Term and intensive teaching seminar dates, and seminar times and venues for each of our training centres, current course fees, application for enrolment form and Prospectus are included in the information package available on request from National Office on (02) 6242 5111, 1300 721 397 or aifc.info@aifc.com.au .

The course is also available by distance education where it is just not possible for a person to attend intensive teaching seminars. This approach however is the least preferred delivery option because students do not have access to the full range of AIFC's resources.

Eligible students can obtain Austudy.
