How Pets Can Help Children Develop In Key Areas - aifc

According to the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne approximately 80% of Australians have or have owned a pet at some stage during their lifetime. Children can gain benefits that go beyond the physical when caring for animals aiding with development in confidence and self esteem.

Pets allow us to make emotional connections. Especially in the case for children who might gain an added interest in researching their pet’s natural habitat, what they like to eat and how to
look after them properly. Kids can gain a greater sense of understanding about life and their environment with the added responsibility of looking after a family pet whether it’s a goldfish, a dog or a cat. In most children this will evoke a sense of kindness and gentleness towards their pet encouraging them to develop a desire for the wellbeing of all living creatures. Pets can also help nurture healthy connections with friends and others they interact with.

We can help and guide them as we interact with them as we enjoy our family time together with our pets. The bible clearly states that we should guide our children and what we teach children will not depart from them. Proverbs 22:6

Children as well as their pets need exercise and play time. Dogs in particular are great for motivating kids and families to take part in outdoor activities.

Dr. James Dobson quote, “Behaviour runs in deep channels that were cut during early childhood, and it is very difficult to alter them. In order to change a deeply ingrained pattern, you have to build a sturdy dam, dig another canal and reroute the river in the new direction. That effort is rarely successful over the long haul.”
