Finding Your Rhythm with God: Creating a Rule for Life
We all live by unspoken rules. Phrases such as “Do your best,” “Never give up,” or “Work harder” often shape our daily choices and patterns. Whether we realise it or not, these mottos guide how we spend our time and energy. But what if, instead of being driven by cultural pressure or busyness, we intentionally created rhythms that drew us closer to God? This is the invitation of an ancient practice known as a Rule for Life—and it has become a powerful tool in Christian counselling to help people establish healthier rhythms and flourish in faith.
Beginning Your Own Rule for Life
Here are guiding steps to begin:
- Notice – Reflect on when and where you feel closest to God, and when you feel most depleted.
- Clarify – Ask what matters most: What values or relationships need more attention? What longings has God placed in your heart?
- Choose – Identify a few life-giving practices—daily prayer, Scripture reading, weekly Sabbath rest, or regular fellowship.
- Anchor – Set regular rhythms for these practices. Consistency is more powerful than intensity.
- Adapt – Let your rule evolve as circumstances change. Be flexible and gracious with yourself.
- Review – Ask regularly: Is this drawing me closer to God? Is it helping me love others more fully?
A Simple Example
- Morning: Dedicate the first moments of the day to prayer and Scripture.
- Midday: Pause to give thanks and acknowledge God’s presence.
- Evening: Reflect on the day with confession and gratitude.
- Weekly: Practise Sabbath rest and fellowship with others.
An Invitation to Flourish
A rule for life is not about earning God’s favour—it is about receiving His grace and creating space for His transforming presence. Begin simply, and allow it to grow with you. Over time, these rhythms help you live less from striving and more from a steady grace in Christ.
A Rule for Life in Christian Counselling
In counselling, clients often wrestle with disordered rhythms—stress, overwork, broken relationships, or lack of boundaries. Many of these struggles are symptoms of lives without grounding practices.
A rule for life can be a practical tool within Christian counselling, helping individuals to:
- Establish healthier rhythms.
- Reconnect with their deepest values and faith.
- Integrate self-care and intentional living into daily practice.
When counsellors encourage clients to develop a rule for life, they are not only supporting therapeutic goals but also fostering long-term spiritual and emotional wellbeing. It is a way of weaving faith into ordinary rhythms and helping clients encounter God’s grace in sustainable ways.
