5 Questions to Help You Discern Your Next Step
Have you ever felt a subtle, quiet, yet persistent nudge to walk alongside people in their pain, offer hope, and speak truth in love?
Maybe you’ve experienced it during a conversation with a friend, a moment of prayer, or the stillness of your healing journey. Have you ever wondered, “Am I called to be a Christian counsellor?” You’re not alone.
At aifc, we speak with people daily who feel the pull toward deeper, more meaningful work. But calling isn’t always clear-cut. That’s why we’ve created five questions to help you prayerfully explore whether this could be your next step.
1. Do I have a heart for people in pain?
Christian counsellors don’t need to have all the answers, but they do need to care deeply.
Do you find yourself moved by the struggles of others? Do you have a genuine desire to listen well, offer comfort, and walk patiently with people through hard things?
A heart for the broken and a willingness to sit in the tension of healing is often one of the first signs of a counselling call.
2. Have people told me I’m a safe person to talk to?
Think back: Have friends, family, or even strangers ever opened up to you easily? Do people say you’re a calming presence, someone they feel they can be honest with?
Being a “safe space” isn’t about fixing people; it’s about being present, compassionate, and grounded. These are natural qualities of an effective Christian counsellor.
3. Do I long to integrate faith with practical support?
The world offers many therapeutic models, but Christian counselling is distinct in its integration of biblical wisdom and psychological insight.
Do you desire to help others, not just cope, but flourish? Do you see healing as more than a mental exercise or something deeply spiritual?
Christian counsellors point people toward wholeness in body, mind, and soul.
4. Am I willing to grow and be transformed in the process?
Becoming a counsellor is just as much about your own journey as it is about helping others.
Are you open to being stretched, challenged, and shaped by what you learn? Are you willing to sit in classrooms and counselling rooms alike, letting God work in you as He works through you?
The best counsellors are those who never stop growing.
5. Do I sense a “yes” even if I still have doubts?
You don’t need to have everything figured out. You might not feel confident yet. But is there a whisper in your spirit that says, “This might be for me”?
Sometimes calling starts not with certainty, but with curiosity.
So… What Now?
