Understanding and Responding to Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) – for Christian Organisations and Counsellors
Owen Robinson is a clinical social worker in private practice (providing counselling since 1999). Having previously worked as a secondary teacher for two decades, Owen admits to having found counselling to be a more rewarding career choice.
He has worked as a branch manager for Relationships Australia, also as a case manager and acting senior social worker for Armadale Adult Mental Health Service; currently Owen is a Medicare provider working from GP practices, a senior consultant for Converge International and an Open Arms Outreach Program Counsellor (formerly Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service), plus he holds an ACA supervisor credential.

- 2008-2011 – Armadale Health Service FDV Committee Member; Co-developed a service-wide on-line mandatory staff training module and a gender-neutral screening tool
- 2006-7 Vice-Chair Domestic Violence Agency Network (East Metro)
- 2004-5 Fremantle Regional Domestic Violence Coordination Committee Member
- 2011 White Ribbon Day Event Co-Host (Armadale) – our street march was led by a Police car, an ambulance and a hearse in that order to make the metaphor; we thought it was a powerful statement at least.
A word from Owen Robinson
Last century when I started to recognise how foolish and unskilled my finger-wagging “Don’t-do-that-to-her-mate” approach to my first domestic violence case was I kind of knew I was in trouble. When I commenced working with Relationships Australia though I became profoundly grateful for the in-house training that helped me start to do sound and safer practice in what still felt like a challenging FDV minefield. I went on to train as a facilitator for the Relationships Australia Family Abuse Integrated Response (FAIR) programme and it was like having the toughest boys from all of the worst classes of my teaching career in the room at one time. Working out how to approach the men in ways so they would challenge the way they arrive at their thinking is something I continue to refine years later. Working with respect for these men and helping them find compassion through their own back story, helping them understand the brain science of overwhelm, anger and even anxiety is a challenge that can be fun and rewarding. I respect that women at times instigate and maintain aggression as well. Most of my experience is with men.
